We’re HOT this year.  Temperatures for our Portland Metro area – which includes Vancouver – is expected to reach 104° 

2015 4th of July fireworks are ON at Fort Vancouver.  Get your tickets now for the 2015 Fort Vancouver 4th of July Fireworks display which will use state of the art fireworks synchronized to music.  The 2015 4th of July Fireworks will be located in Pearson Field.

St. Paul’s Rodeo and 4th of July Fireworks 

This is their 80th Annual event.  Watch the bucking broncos, then when sun sets, a good old fashioned 4th of July fireworks display!  “Where Respect is Earned” This is the 80th Annual St. Paul’s Rodeo and 4th of July Fireworks running July 1st – 5th 2015.

Calendar your 4th of July St. Paul’s Rodeo events ~ 10:00 a.m. the Parade starts and then all day long the fun continues!

 

2015 Safeway Waterfront Blues Festival and Firework Display

Take the MAX and attend the Safeway Waterfront Blues Festival.  In it’s 28th year, it’s the largest blues festival west of the Mississippi!  Once the sun sets on July 4th the fireworks begin.  This events runs July 2nd through July 5th.

What a line up at the 2015 Safeway Waterfront Blues Festival:  Gregg Allman, Macy Gray, Sammy “Duck” Holmes (should fit right in!), Charmaine Neville, The Paladins, Jessica Hernandez and the Deltas, Jelly Bread, Stone Foxes, Con Brio, Rosie Ledet, Lazer Lloyd  . . . the line-up is AMAZING this year!

4th of July Events in Hillsboro

* The C.A.T. Walk and Fun Run 5K – In its 12th year, this 5K walk/run 4th of July event in Hillsboro is a testimony to the community’s resolve to help fight all forms of cancer.  This annual family friendly event is a prelude to the largest 4th of July parade in Oregon (the famous Hillsboro Rotary Parade). Participants will be treated to three events: a Kids’ Dash, competitive 5k run, 5k walk”and a health fair.

* The annual 4th of July Paradesponsored by the Rotary Club since 1926! I have to be honest here, the Rotary Club’s website SUCKS!!  The site is extremely  hard to navigate and you have to dig for information on this grand event.  Please don’t let this distract you from planning on the 2014  4th of July Parade Event in Hillsboro.

* Lake Oswego  – 4th of July in Lake Oswego is packed all day long with events!  Starting off at 7:00 a.m. a Pancake Breakfast sponsored by the Lake Oswego Lions Club, then at 10:00 a.m. the Lake Oswego Star Spangled Parade, BBQ at Milliennium Park, Lake Corporation Boat Parade and finally at 9:45 p.m. Lake Oswego will have their wonderful 4th of July fireworks display for the 4th of July Independence Day celebration.

Since my move to Portland in 1990, I’ve gotten so used to living here and I LOVE IT!

America’s 6th Fastest Growing States.  Oregon is one of the fastest growing economies

  • GDP growth: 4.7 percent
  • Real 2012 GDP: $186.228 billion (25th highest)
  • Population change: +0.87 percent (16th highest). In 2014, Oregon was also the top destination in the country for people to move to, according to a study by United Van Lines

Oregon is on the fastest-growing states list for a reason! It became the nation’s sixth best economy in 2014 with economic growth of 3.6%, according to the latest government data. Oregon’s GDP is nearly three times that of the U.S. economy.

A manufacturing resurgence is propelling Oregon forward. HavingNike (NKE)’s headquarters and Intel (INTC, Tech30)’s production unit in its backyard has certainly helped. The state exports everything from computer processors to wheat.

The Beaver state has consistently added jobs since the financial crises, especially in major industries like healthcare, manufacturing, services and hospitality. The state’s unemployment rate — 5.2% — is below the national average

This can be attributed to a reverse off-shoring trend that is occurring partially as a result of defects, delays and theft in overseas supply chain locations.

Here are my top 10 reasons to move to Portland in no particular order:

  1. Mt. Hood year round skiing The mountain has six ski areas: Timberline, Mount Hood Meadows, Ski Bowl, Cooper Spur, Snow Bunny, and Summit.
  2. Downtown Portland the charm of the city is apparent.
  3. Silicon Forest Surrounding Portland are many major high-tech employers. Many employees move to Portland due to job relocation. With over 25 major high-tech companies including Intel, Tektronics, IBM, Mentor Graphics, Nike (world headquarters and several campuses within Washington County) and the countless smaller and/or independent companies that thrive in the Silicon Forest. There is no doubt that the drawing card to many folks considering a move to Portland is the lush, green Silicon Forest.Intel Corporation, the world’s leading manufacturer of semiconductors (an essential component of most consumer electronics), is Oregon’s top private employer with a work force of approximately 18,500 in 2011.
  4. Suburbs Many people moving to Portland want to live in the ‘burbs. No problem there. Suburban Portland neighborhoods include: Northeast Portland | North Portland | Southeast Portland | Happy Valley| Westside Suburbs | Beaverton | Orenco Station | Hillsboro | Lake Oswego | Northwest Portland | Southwest Suburbs | Sherwood | Tigard | Tualatin | West Linn | Wilsonville |
  5. Schools — great public and private educational institutions throughout Portland Metro. From early education with Montessori Schools for the darling pre-kindergarten group all the way up to post doctoral and advanced degrees at OHSU (Oregon Health and Sciences University).
  6. Urban Trends . . . one Word:  PORTLANDIA.  Yup, put a BIRD ON IT!  It’s exactly like that!
  7. Weather Want to know what the weather in Portland is like here you go. YES it rains here and as everyone says, “It keeps us lush and green.” But we have the four distinct seasons:
    • Summers in Portland are warm, sunny and rather dry, with August, the warmest month, averaging 79.7 °F .  We have a larger day-night variation than in winter, nightfall is 9:00PM during the peak of summer.   Many people moving to Portland are amazed that A/C units aren’t found in every home.
    • Winters in Portland are normally mild, but very moist.  January averaging 39.9 °F. Cold snaps are short-lived, and snowfall occurs no more than a few times per year, although the city has been known to see major snow and ice storms because of the cold air outflow from the Columbia River Gorge, and Arctic blasts from Alaska.
    • Springs in Portland can bring rather unpredictable weather, resulting from warm spells, to thunderstorms rolling off the Cascade Range. The rainfall averages an equivalent 37.5 inch per year in downtown Portland spread over 155 days a year.
    • Fall in Portland is Spring in reverse. October being a month of Indian Summers, then heading into November, the weather cools.
  8. No Sales Tax yes that’s correct. The State of Oregon does not have a sales tax. If you purchase something for $4.95 and hand a $5.00 bill to the clerk, you will get a Nickelback! 😉
  9. Affordable Real Estate ~ the Portland Metro area has some very affordable prices on housing. Compared to our West Coast neighbors of San Diego, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Seattle and parts in between, for a metropolitan real estate market we’re very reasonable.
  10. Green Living

Oregon is also nurturing more clean tech green construction, ocean energy and nanotechnology. The Oregon Nanoscience and Microtechnologies Institute has helped 22 nanotech start-ups raise $96 million. Portland OR “America’s Best Downtowns” According to Forbes

America’s Best Downtown Portland Oregon

Forbes Magazine recently gave the nod to Downtown Portland Oregon as being one of America’s Best Downtowns.  I could not agree any more! Downtown Portland is truly a wonderful place.

When it comes to cities, Portland, Ore., is a unique urban playground of high-end culture, green living and DIY arts scenes. But for a taste of Portland’s best, natives point to the city’s downtown area. There’s independent live theater, beautiful parks, the largest independent and used bookstore in the country and some of the best doughnut shops on the Pacific Coast (not to mention a plethora of Portland’s celebrated food trucks). ~~ John Giuffo, Contributor Forbes

Normally, I can’t stand the “lists” of the Best Places to Live, or the Best Places to Retire.  There’s typically a 10 top and that makes me wonder what about all the other GREAT PLACES in America to live?

Lifestyles Across America is a great portal for all things best, but I digress.

Portland, Ore.

Although Portland is well known as a city that is friendly to bicyclists, it also has a walkable and attractive downtown that offers a wide variety of cultural options and commercial options. There’s a vibrant and active arts scene, great food on both the high and low ends, the country’s best selection of locally-sourced craft beers, an attractive and popular riverside park, and Powell’s, the largest and one of the best independent bookstores in the country. And while you can, with some effort walk around much of Portland’s relatively small downtowns, its best to mike (sic) like a local and rent a bike“ you’ll get around more effectively, see more of the area, and get a little exercise  all good things in the greenest of America’s 50 Greenest Cities ~~ Forbes

Portland, Ore has one of the best Downtowns in America.  I know, because I live here and I love Downtown Portland!  I’ve always felt Portland’s Downtown was clean, safe, charming, quaint and very reminiscent of some European city centers such as Amsterdam.

Moving to Portland and I did just that in July 1990. My family and I moved to the Metro Portland area from Los Angeles and it was probably the best move I’ve ever made. Of course, I was like any other buyer moving to Portland, I didn’t understand the lay of the land, I didn’t know about the commutes or traffic patterns and I certainly didn’t know the easiest way to get from Beaverton to Portland, but I acclimated.
