Private Mortgage Insurance… What is it? Are you currently paying private mortgage insurance, or PMI, on top of your monthly payments?

Private mortgage insurance, also called PMI, is a type of mortgage insurance you might be required to pay for if you have a conventional loan. Like other kinds of mortgage insurance, PMI protects the lender—not you—if you stop making payments on your loan. The lender arranges for Private Mortgage Insurance through a private insurance company. PMI is usually required when you have a conventional loan and your mortgage down payment is less than 20 percent of the home’s purchase price.  In addition to PMI for a home purchase, if you refinance and the equity in your home is less than 20%, PMI may also be required.  Below are some thoughts I would like to share with you on PMI.
