Defending men's champion Wojciech Szewczyk and defending women's champion Chihiro Kawahara head the entry list. The published rules follow the WPA standard: cue ball on the spot, no break box, and the three-point rule is enforced. Results, draws and live action will be available through Kozoom Pool and Chinese broadcast platforms. The most interesting thing is not who has the richest trophy cabinet but the format itself. Men: double elimination race-to-9 until 32 players remain, then single elimination race-to-11. Women: double elimination race-to-7 until 16 players remain, then single elimination race-to-9. This staged structure is more subtle than it looks. A race-to-9 is already longer than the usual short races, but because the early stage is double elimination, a player can lose the first match without going home. That prevents early seeded shocks. Once the bracket reaches single elimination, the number of racks rises to 11, enough to reward a player with a stable technical base. Imagine a player leading 5-0 and losing rhythm. In qualifying, he or she still has a chance to repair. In the direct knockout stage, a wrong shot in the final rack becomes absolute. Error is where reality signs its name. The second point concerns the three-point rule. I do not have complete data on how often this rule has been triggered in recent events, but if it is applied as described, it creates a psychological bottleneck far harder to manage than a normal run. A break shot that drifts by half a ball can put the player in a punished position. When the match is over, numbers can lie more delicately than players, and many matches in this kind of event are decided by penalty points rather than by beautiful shots. The third point is about field depth. The men's side includes Joshua Filler, a three-time winner; Albin Ouschan, a two-time world champion; and Francisco Sanchez Ruiz, the freshly crowned US Open champion. Fedor Gorst is also there. The women's side includes Chihiro Kawahara, Seo Seoa, the current world champion, and Wei Tzu-Chien, the world number one. The event also features Dang Jinhu, Liu Shasha and Fu Xiaofang. On paper, the Chinese force is not merely a guest list. They are at home, with local fans and more table familiarity. All of that creates a multi-dimensional power map: the title-contending group is not from one country but spread across the United States, Poland, Japan, Austria and China. If I used titles alone to rank chances, I would put Szewczyk and Kawahara on top.
