When the analysis sheet is blank: the writer and the duty to say the data is not enough

Stop when the story is unclear. Stop before turning an unverified number into a truth for millions of readers. The blank file had no player, no score, no moment. But it gave us a reason to look at our profession. Pure sports news is not news written quickly. It is news written from what has been confirmed. When there is nothing to confirm, a decent newspaper will say there is nothing to say yet. That is not a lack of ideas. That is an abundance of responsibility.
